Who is Rescue Rue appropriate for?

Rescue Rue is a musical fairytale for kids and kids at heart—particularly for anyone who’s known the love of a dog! We say the show is for 3 and up, with our target being elementary school-aged audiences (notably ages 3-8). But we’ve had kids as young as 3 come to the show and enjoy the puppets and dance numbers, and those as old as 13 held rapt at the story of a young dog trying to find her place in the world. Adults love it too… Rescue Rue has something for everyone!

Is this show a good choice for school, community, and/or professional productions?

With flexible cast and band sizes, as well as the ability to do the show with or without puppets, and potentially minimal sets – not to mention the social message and educational lesson of the show (see below for more) – it’s a perfect choice for any school, community, or professional theater group.

Speaking of which, what size is the cast and band?

Cast: The show is flexible on casting both in size and gender.  The cast can be as small as 6 performers and as large as 14 performers, even more if the ensemble tracks are shared amongst different actors instead of multi-tracked to a core cast.

At the NYCTF the show was performed with nine actors, at NYMF it was performed with seven. (Seven performers allows for for each member of the cast to have a main character they play in addition to some ensemble roles, except Rue and the Narrator who will remain their characters through the show. It can be tracked to fewer characters if the Narrator takes on more characters.)

Band: For NYMF (as at NYCTF) we utilized a minimal 3-piece band consisting of piano, bass, drums. This being said, the pit may be reduced to just a piano and is also expandable beyond 3 pieces, with details available on request.

Does the show have to be performed with puppets?

Of course not! If a production chooses to do the musical without puppets, they can do so easily. (That said, a set of rental puppets can be made available for interested parties, so no need to build your own set!)

What are the themes, message, and lesson of Rescue Rue?

Rescue Rue is a show about finding one’s place in the world and keeping up your head held high despite the curveballs life throws along the way. It’s also a show about adoption, and can help start a conversation surrounding why people choose to adopt and the importance of adoption.

Where can I see video? Is there music online?

Sadly, there are no videos of the complete show available – our first production, at the NY Children’s Theater Festival, was presented as an AEA Showcase that prohibits any recording and our second, at NYMF, allows for only snippets of B-roll to have been created. For a trailer from the NYMF production, click HERE!

We also have demos of some of the music HERE, and you can check out photos from our previous productions HERE to get a sense of the show!

Who do we contact if we're interested in producing or licensing the show?
